Find restaurants with gluten free menus in your city. Many restaurants post their gluten free menus on their websites. These restaurants do serve food with gluten, but they also offer gluten free meal options.
How do I get Gluten Free food at a restaurant? Don’t be afraid to ask questions! If you feel uncomfortable with what you hear from staff, ask to speak to the chef or manager. Call ahead when you are going to a restaurant that is new to you. Inform the staff that you need a gluten free meal, make them convince you that they know what gluten free means. You need to be confident that the restaurant knows and understands. This can be difficult, but it is the only way you can improve your chances of getting safe food. Ask your family and friends to help deal with staff, so you don’t have to do it all the time. If you need to explain what gluten free food is you will probably be disappointed. The restaurant should be able to convince you, that they can serve you a gluten free meal. If you are not convinced – LEAVE! Better safe than sorry.
Other food allergies – Many restaurants that serve gluten free food can also serve food to guests with other food allergies. Give the restaurant a call, ask them if they can serve you. The restaurants you will find on the Celiac Restaurant Guide won’t cater to every allergy but they are a good place to start looking.
